How to Read Three Books at Once

So with Bookcon over and my being home for the summer I have a mile long reading list I have yet to make a dent in. I am also feeling a bit scatter brained at the moment making reading frustrating. I find myself reading one book partway through then picking up another and alternating between the two. Then there’s audio books. Don’t forget the kindle. And now there are e-reader apps for your phone. No I’m not texting. I’m actually reading so please do not disturb. With that being said I am currently reading 3 books at once to combat my slow attention span of late. So here’s how I’m doing it.

Book #1, the e-reader app: What’s the first thing you do when you wake up in the morning? CHECK YOUR PHONE…RIGHT. So i you have to wake up early set it for 15 minutes earlier than normal then open your e-reader and dive into one of your books. Then read on your phone during the day, during your lunch break, or if having a real book open is inconvenient. I also read on my phone while I’m at the gym doing cardio.

Book #2, the audio book: Have a long commute to work? A road trip coming up? Or just having a lie in cuddled up with your computer? Perfect time for the audio book. You can knock out several if you’ve got a long road trip. And a 30 minute to an hour long drive to work coves about half a book in one day. Very entertaining, and fun way to knock out a book. On average audio books can be about 4-6 hours long. Sometimes they are expensive if you buy them on the kindle, but on Itunes they aren’t too bad. Also, if you have a library card there are countless audio books you can download straight to an mp3 or, watch on your computer instantly, or check out for free. I highly recommend this option!

Book #3, the good old fashioned book: This is what I like to read at night before bed. You are in the comfort of your own home, and your reading is not ill timed or disturbing to others. I also read my real books at this time because I try to avoid using electronics close to bed time which can wire your brain, keep you up, and disturb your sleep cycle. There was a study done on the kindles and nooks and the result was there is something about the lighting of the screen that keeps you awake. Not good if you are trying to wind down.

The three books I’m currently reading are

The One That Got Away by Simon Wood

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne

Ready Player One by Ernest Cline

-How do you multitask your reading? What is everyone currently reading?

  1. Currently listening to Ready Player One audio book after reading the book twice. Still great third time around. If you want a good morning read I would recommend Mr. Penumbra’s 24 hour bookstore by Robin Sloan and another great audio book The Martian by Andy Weird, the audio book won at the Audience Awards for best Science Fiction audiobook. This all assuming that these books aren’t part of your book list. Enjoy the reading.
